ELECTRIC OVERLAND
LANDROVER RESTORATION SPECIALIST
Mechanical upgrades and
improvements
Over the years we’ve worked on countless Series and Defender Land Rovers, and one thing is always true: no two are exactly alike. Many owners want to keep the classic look and feel, but improve reliability, comfort, and safety with a range of well-proven upgrades. We can guide you through the options and tailor the work to how you use your vehicle.
Engines and drivetrains
Upgrading the engine or gearbox can transform the way a Land Rover drives. Common changes include fitting a 200 or 300 Tdi in place of an older unit, moving to a Rover V8 petrol for a different character, or remapping a TD5 or Puma engine for more usable torque.
For those who want to go further, we can also carry out crate engine installs such as LS or Cummins units. Gearbox swaps, transfer box ratio changes, and even full automatic conversions are available, giving you smoother, stronger performance while keeping the vehicle faithful to its roots. For more detailed information please go to our 'Engine and Transmission' section.
Axles, suspension, and steering
A more comfortable ride and sharper handling are easy to achieve with the right suspension setup. We fit parabolic springs to Series models, uprated coils and shocks to Defenders, and can add polybush kits for durability. Power steering conversions are a popular upgrade, especially on older trucks, while heavy-duty half-shafts, CV joints, and locking or limited-slip differentials give more strength and capability when used off-road or for towing.
Braking and safety
Brakes are a key area where improvements make a big difference. We can fit disc brake conversions to Series vehicles, upgrade Defenders with vented discs, or refresh brake systems with braided hoses and modern servos. The aim is always the same: shorter stopping distances, lighter pedal effort, and more confidence on the road. Roll cages, both external and internal, can also be fitted for added safety without taking away from the classic look.
Bodywork and chassis
Underneath, many owners choose to invest in a galvanised chassis to ensure the vehicle is ready for decades of use. Bulkheads can be repaired or replaced, and underbody coatings or wax treatments applied to protect against rust. These upgrades not only extend the life of the vehicle but also make future maintenance easier. For more detailed information please go to our 'Bodywork and Protection' and 'Chassis and Bulkhead' Sections.
Electrics and interior
Modern electrical systems can be fitted without spoiling originality. We can rewire vehicles with modern looms, add LED lighting, fit heated windscreens and mirrors, and install better heating or even air conditioning. Inside, options range from upgraded soundproofing and insulation through to retrimmed seats, improved seating comfort, and modern entertainment systems with Bluetooth, navigation, or CarPlay.
24 Volt to 12 volt conversions
We can convert ex-military or specialist 24-volt Land Rovers to a 12-volt system, making them easier to maintain and more practical to use day to day. The conversion usually involves fitting a new 12-volt alternator, starter motor, coil, and associated wiring, along with replacing lighting, gauges, and accessories so everything runs correctly on the lower voltage. The benefit is straightforward: 12-volt parts are easier to source, more compatible with modern accessories, and simpler to service, while the vehicle retains all the reliability you expect from a properly rebuilt electrical system.
Making it yours...
These are just some of the upgrades we carry out regularly. The nature of Land Rovers means every vehicle becomes its own project, with details shaped by how each owner wants to use it. With Chris’s experience and knowledge, there is very little we cannot do, and we take pride in finding the right solution to suit your vehicle and your plans.
